Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences ‘ın hikayesi 1935 yılında Klaipeda’da Pedagogical Institute of the Republic of Lithuania olarak eğitime başlamasına dayanır. Enstitü, pedagoji alanında ülkede eğitim veren ilk yüksekokuldur. Bu tarihten önce de öğretmen eğitme aktiviteleri ve eğitimleri vermekteydi. Sonraki 80 yıl içerisinde birleşmeler ve eklemelerle okul adını ve lokasyonunu birkaç kez değiştirmiştir.
Üniversite öğrencilerine 3 farklı program sunmaktadır; the first cycle – lisans, the second cycle – yüksek lisans ve the third one – doktora programları. Lisans programlarından öğrencilere 10 farklı alan sunulmaktadır; pedagoji, psikoloji, filoloji, tarih, felsefe, ekonomi, işletme yönetimi ve teknolojileri. Yüksek lisans programlarında öğrencilere sunulan alanlar; eğitim, pedagoji, psikoloji, sosyal çalışmalar, sosyoloji, dilbilim, sanat çalışmaları, tarih, enformasyon teknolojileri ve matematiktir.
Üniversite araştırmaları 7 fakülte, 3 araştırma enstitüsü ve 4 araştırma merkezi tarafından yürütülmektedir. Bilimler araştırmalarda üniversite özellikle 5 alanda yoğunlaşmaktadır
